How Wireless
Works
The Michiana Free-Net Society in conjunction with the St. Joseph County Public Library and the City
of South Bend is very excited about the new wireless Internet Canopy over
downtown South Bend. Please understand that this project is being developed in stages.
Wireless enabled computers are
able to connect at high speeds at places in downtown South Bend from
Monroe on the South to Bartlett on the North, Lafayette on the West and
St.
Joseph Street on the East. Users will have Internet access at tables outside any restaurant, your car, or inside any restaurant or business that joins the project.
Wireless access points have been installed around the area described above and these access points are connected to each other by radio frequency. The signal is relayed to a central point that is wired into the Internet. With a wireless network interface card (NIC) in your laptop or your computer (if you are a downtown business) plus your Free-Net ID login, you can connect to the wireless network. You can roam around in the areas that have coverage without losing your connection as different access points provide the signal your NIC card needs to stay connected. Please note that coverage will vary depending on your equipment and location.
